So, You Wanted to See an Elk

In the desert and in the mountains, we saw many signs warning us of various animals we might encounter along the highway. Thankfully, we have not yet, on the road. Both of us had hoped to see some of the native wildlife.

After watching the sun set at the Grand Canyon, we walked the trail from Yavapie to Bright Angel. The moon was full, the sky was clear, so it was a bright night. The rimside lodges are all clustered together. As we walked along, the canyon to our right and the lodges to our left, Andy grabbed Kristi’s arm and said, “So, you wanted to see an elk?” There, in the front yard of one of the lodges, stood an elk, not forty feet away. Kristi scrambled to get her camera out and adjust the settings for the lighting. There was no need to hurry. The elk was at the buffet. We managed to get the night shot, and next morning learned there are several, they have names (Leroy and Dennis the Menace), and they frequently graze the lodge lawns.
